Schroder House - Recreation
3D Models
Recreation of the famous Schroder House from Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld in 1924.
When starting the Schroder house, I looked at research
images of the exterior to get an idea of how to
start making a 3D model of the house in Autodesk Maya.
I first started by creating the front side of the building. I initially created a cube
thinking the house was just one big square with poles and windows around it but I came
to realize that its multiple flat panels of plaster and brick that make up the exterior of the Schroder house.
I also created the balcony first before the first floor because the measurements and positioning of the second floor
was much more complex than it looks.
I then went on to create the second floor along with the windows and began modeling the left side of the building which was easier to model than the front. The windows had small columns both vertically and horizontally and I placed them in front of the windows just like in the original. The Schroder house had a hole in the front side on the top so I added that; as well as the roof sticking out over the balconies. I also many small windows to the right of the front side.
The right side of the Schroder house had a lot of detail similar to the front side. It had the railing as well as multiple windows of different sizes. I had trouble finding a picture of the right side of the Schroder house so I decided to use a 2d picture as reference.
After finally finishing 3d modeling and positioning the buildings parts at the right height I brought the 3d model to substance painter to add color and texture to the Schroder House. I used plaster for most of the Schroder house and white concrete for the white brick areas.
Here is my final result:
